NESTS
The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard
In the chapter “Nests”, Bachelard talks about the conceptual implications of a bird's nest—concepts behind the meaning of home, security, and love. I wanted to explore how I could use typography and illustration to further Bachelard’s perspective through editorial design.

Gaston Bachelard was a French philosopher who made contributions in the fields of poetics and philosophy of science. In the chapter NESTS, Bachelard talks about the conceptual implications of the bird's nest. Concepts behind the meaning of home, security, and love.
After reading this chapter, I was heavily inspired to create an editorial design showcasing a few of the beautiful metaphors he uses to convey these universal experiences. I chose three passages that could be interpreted through illustrations and typography to further push the comparison of nests to life in general.
Using simple fine-line illustrations and elegant typography, I created a piece of art for each of these passages that connects the two worlds as Bachelard sees them, a place where human dwelling is closely connected to the intimate animal world. You will notice that the layout of this chapter is anything but symmetrical. This was done intentionally to reflect the fluid and messy nature of a birds nest which is constantly refered to throughout the chapter. This layout paired with the pull-out quotes and illustrations furthers the narrative that our desires for things such as space, comfort, and love align with the desires of the animal kingdom and in turn, reflect our deep psychological needs.
